Over the past six weeks, I’ve had the opportunity to complete my final year SaLT degree placement with LST. Coming into this experience, I was eager to further develop my clinical skills and gain a deeper understanding of how theory translates into real-world practice—and it’s safe to say this placement has exceeded my expectations!
From the very beginning, I was made to feel like a valued member of the team. The supportive environment allowed me to build confidence quickly, ask questions openly, and take an active role in day-to-day activities. This sense of inclusion made a huge difference in how much I was able to learn and contribute.
Over the past month in particular, I’ve had the chance to get involved in a variety of tasks that have really strengthened my clinical knowledge. I’ve observed and supported therapy sessions, worked alongside experienced therapists, and begun working independently with children with a wide range of needs, including speech sound disorders, social communication differences, and language difficulties. I have really enjoyed the variety of therapy I have been able to deliver - no two days are ever the same!
A particularly valuable part of my experience has been taking on more responsibility within sessions. Having the opportunity to plan and lead my own therapy sessions has really helped to develop my confidence in structuring activities, assessing outcomes, and completing clinical notes. In addition, I was able to carry out an initial assessment, which involved selecting appropriate assessment tools, conducting classroom observations, gathering background information, and formally assessing the child’s needs. I was also fortunate to gain experience in report writing which included writing a detailed report based on my assessment, sharing my findings with parents and school staff, and offering practical advice on how best to support the child’s language development.
One of the most valuable aspects of this placement has been developing my ability to reflect on practice. Whether it’s considering how to adapt communication styles, understanding client needs more holistically, or thinking critically about therapy approaches, I’ve learned how important reflection is in becoming an effective practitioner.
Overall, this experience has been incredibly beneficial in shaping my confidence and professional identity as I prepare to graduate. It has reinforced my passion for the field and given me practical skills that I will carry forward into my future career.
I’m very grateful to everyone at LST for their support, encouragement, and willingness to share their knowledge. This placement has been a truly valuable part of my journey into becoming a Speech and Language Therapist.
